Health classes explained
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard: what these categories signal and the factors that move applicants among them.
Carriers set term life rates according to rate classification. Naming varies between companies, but the framework stays consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, followed by table ratings for higher-risk applicants. Tobacco users occupy a distinct set of classes with higher premiums.
What underwriters look at
Physical measurements (height and weight ratio), blood pressure and lipid panels, family medical history (heart disease or cancer before age 60), driving record, medication list, job type and pastimes, and nicotine or tobacco use. The top category requires clean results in nearly all areas; Preferred allows minor variations; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate regulated conditions like managed blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health section asks for your honest self-assessment: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your quotes will reflect that category; underwriting by the carrier after application confirms your ultimate category. When uncertain, try quoting under two different categories and evaluate side-by-side; the application process determines the final rating. A conservative category estimate won't lower your final rate; it only changes the accuracy of the forecast.
Susman Insurance Agency can help you compare carriers with different medical guidelines, which often matters more than the listed rate.
